MAUNDY THURSDAY, GOOD FRIDAY AND HOLY SATURDAY IN PRZEMYSL CATHEDRAL

Maundy Thursday:
The 2017 Paschal Triduum in St. John the Baptist Cathedral commenced with Maundy Thursday.

The Holy Thursday Vesperal Liturgy of St. Basil the Great was celebrated by the Archbishop and Metropolitan of Przemysl – Warsaw, Most Rev. Eugeniusz Popowicz; the Archbishop Emeritus of Przemysl – Warsaw Most, Rev. Jan Martyniak; Rev. Mitred Bogdan Stepan – the pastor of the Cathderal; Rev. Pawel Rohun – the Chancellor of the Curia; Rev. Dmytro Leszko – the vicar of the Cathedral; Rev. Jan Tarapcki – the Dean of the Przemysl Deanery; Fr. Dymitr Harasim, OSBM – the hegemon of the Przemysl monastery of the Order of St. Basil the Great; Rev. Krzysztof Blazejewski – the pastor of the Jaroslaw parish and Rev. Miron Michaliszyn.

Most Rev. Popowicz delivered the sermon, blessed chrism and, after the Liturgy, performed the Washing of the Feet rite.

Good Friday:

On Friday, Most Rev. Eugeniusz Popowicz, Most Rev. Jan Martyniak, Rev. Mitred Bogdan Stepan and Rev. Dmytro Leszko celebrated the Holy Friday Vespers with Placing of the Holy Shroud.

After the Vespers, many faithful remained in Cathedral and prayed before the Holy Shroud.

At 8 PM, Most Rev. Eugeniusz Popowicz and Rev. Mitred Bogdan Stepan began Jerusalem Matins which „is arguably the most aesthetically beautiful service of the entire Christian year. During the Matins, we accompany the Faithful Myrrh-bearing Women and their Companions, who, keeping Vigil at the Graveside, mourn the Crucified Christ. The hymns are hauntingly lyrical and reflect a profound spirituality, expressing the anguish of loss and the yearning for restoration and justice.” (http://www.akordchoir.ca)

Holy Saturday
Holy Saturday, traditionally, began at 9 AM with Vespers and the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great celebrated by Most Rev. Eugeniusz Popowicz, Most Rev. Jan Martyniak and Rev. Mitred Bogdan Stepan, who delivered the sermon.

After the Liturgy, the faithful made their way to Cathedral’s square where Most Rev. Popowicz, Most Rev. Martyniak and Rev. Mitred Bogdan Stepan blessed Easter baskets brought by the faithful.

It is worth mentioning that all baskets were prepared according to Ukrainian tradition and thus looked beautiful.
