On the 19th December 2015, Most Reverend Eugeniusz Popowicz was installed as the Metropolitan of Przemysl-Warsaw at the St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Przemysl, Poland.

Biography:

Eugeniusz (Popowicz) – the Archbishop and Metropolitan of Przemysl-Warsaw of the Greek Catholic Church in Poland.

Most Reverend Popowicz was born on the 12th October 1961 in Czluchow (Pomorskie Voivodeship, Poland). He graduated from the Higher Theological Seminary in Lublin with a degree in Theology. On the 14th October 1986 he was ordained as a deacon and on the 17th October 1986 as a priest by Abp Myroslaw Marusyn.

Following the ordination Rev. Popowicz served as a vicar in Paslek and Elblag parishes, respectively. After two years he was sent to pursue further studies in Eastern Canon Law at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome. In 1993 he was awarded Ph.D.

As soon as he finished his specialization, upon His Eminence Miroslaw Lubacziwski’s request, Rev. Popowicz started work in Ukraine. He was appointed as the Judicial Vicar at the Metropolitan Church Court. At the same time, he gave lectures at Seminaries in Lviv and Tarnopol, respectively, and at the Theological Academy in Lviv.

In 1995, Rev. Mitred Eugeniusz Miroslaw Popowicz, Ph.D. was appointed as a pastor of the Greek Catholic parishes in Gorowo Ilaweckie and Lelkowo, respectively. A year later, following Rev. Mitred Teodor Majkowicz’s ordination as the first Bishop of the newly-established Diocese of Wroclaw-Gdansk, Rev. Popowicz received the position of a pastor of the Cathedral parish in Przemysl and was appointed as the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Przemysl – Warsaw.

His Holiness Pope Francis, on the 4th November 2013, nominated Rev. Mitred Eugeniusz Popowicz, Ph.D. as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Przemysl-Warsaw and appointed him to a titular see of Orreacelia.

His Consecration took place at the Greek Catholic St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Przemysl, Poland on the 21st December 2013. The main consecrator was the Greek Catholic Patriarch, Most Reverend Swiatoslaw Szewczuk. Most Rev. On the 7th November 2015, His Holiness Pope Francis accepted Most Rev. Jan Martyniak’s resignation from the position of the Archbishop and Metropolitan of Przemysl-Warsaw of the Greek Catholic Church in Poland and appointed Most Rev. Eugeniusz Miroslaw Popowicz as the new Archbishop and Metropolitan of Przemysl – Warsaw.
