Festival at Rev. Markian Shashkevych School Complex in Przemysl

Rev. Markian Shashkevych School Complex in Przemysl celebrated its annual festival. The event commenced with the Divine Liturgy, in St. John the Baptist Archcathedral in Przemysl, celebrated by Most Rev. Eugeniusz Popowicz, the Metropolitan of Przemysl – Warsaw, Rev. Mitred Bogdan Stepan and Rev. Jan Tarapacki. Confession was provided by Rev. Pawel Rohun and Rev. Dmytro Leszko. The Divine Liturgy was attended by school’s headmaster, teachers, guests, students and their parents. Subsequently, all participants went to the Przemysl Municipal Cultural Centre to take part in the artistic event.
On the same day, prior to the Divine Liturgy, Most Rev. Eugeniusz Popowicz blessed a new religious education classroom at Rev. Markian Shashkevych School Complex. The new classroom was named after its new patron – Blessed Ivan Zyatyk*.
The new regligious education classroom, thanks to Rev. Dmytro Leszko and private donors, was redecorated and adapted to the needs of teaching and learning religious education. The rite of blessing of the classroom was atteneded by students, teachers, religious sisters and clergy from Przemysl. Subsequently, Most Rev. Eugeniusz Popowicz visited and blessed religious education classroom for younger students who are taught by Sister Daniela Szumna, religious education teacher.

Ivan Zyatyk – born in Odrzechowa (Przemysl region) on 26th December 1899. He studied at the Przemysl Greek Catholic Seminary. From 1923 to 1935 he taught at the Seminary and was a religious education teacher in Przemysl. In 1935 he entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. On 5th January 1950 he was arrested by the communist authorities in Ukraine. On Good Friday of 1952 Ivan was beaten at Ozerlager in Irkutsk Oblast, USSR and in consequence died on 17th May 1952. In 2001 Ivan Ziatyk was beatified by Pope John Paul II, upon His visit in Lviv, Ukraine.
