In memory of Rev. Mykhailo Verbytsky

Yesterday, on the 4th March, we celebrated the anniversary of birthdate of Rev. Mykhailo Verbytsky – the author of the national anthem of Ukraine. The celebration commenced with the Divine Liturgy in Intercession of the Theotokos Church in Mlyny, Poland, where Rev. Verbytsky served as a pastor. After the Liturgy, prayers were continued in a chapel-pantheon over Rev. Verbytsky’s tomb.

The Divine Liturgy, as well as prayers, were celebrated by Most Rev. Eugeniusz Popowicz, the Archbishop and Metropolitan of Przemysl – Warsaw. He was assisted by Rev. Pawel Rohun, the pastor of the Mlyny parish, as well as other priests from Poland and Ukraine.

Approximately 1 000 people attended the celebration, among whom were representatives of Lviv, Ukraine and Podkarpackie Voivodeship (region), Poland local governments – Mr Oleh Synyutka, the Head of the Regional Administration Office from Lviv and Ewa Lenart, the Voivod (head) of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, from Poland. Moreover, there were present representatives of local governments from Jaroslaw, Poland, Yavoriv, Ukraine and other social and cultural associations from both countries.

Today, on the 5th March, celebrations continued in Jawornik Ruski, Poland – the birthplace of Rev. Verbytsky. At 12 PM, Most Rev. Eugeniusz Popowicz celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the local church.
